unasked for advertising - three words
Spam can be both on message boards and in your email box. I also have gotten spam through private messages.
What I don't understand...I've been in business since 1983, and NOT ONCE have I met someone who has said "yes I built my business from spamming others". So, I really have no clue how the myth that spam works continues.

You said: "NOT ONCE have I met someone who has said 'yes I built my business from spamming others'".
That's funny :)
What drives me nuts is when you have a double opt-in newsletter and some people still mark it as spam and you get a complaint report from Aweber :( Those darn spammers make it hard even for those of us who are following the rules lol.

Marlo,
I use AWeber also. They are awesome. Don't worry about the complaints. Usually it's someone who didn't realize they were signing up or someone who forgot etc. Truly I get so few complaints, I just don't worry about it.

Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages, which are universally undesired. While the most widely recognized form of spam is email spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, mobile phone messaging spam, internet forum spam and junk fax transmissions.

Spam means goooooood burgers grilled with american cheese and a slice of pineapple. :)
Not sure how healthy it is. But it's a little piece of heaven.

If you add some teriyaki sauce you've just created my favorite burger.

I've got another one - "spamming" is also used to describe any number of unethical techniques used in order to give a website unjustified higher rankings in search engine results. At least in that area, spammers usually get theirs in the end - by being blacklisted if caught.
