Just curious how many of your clients are on retainer? I have one on retainer right now and would love at least one more :D
None of my clients have signed retainer agreements but I know that two will have work for me each week because I'm handling one client's blog and the other puts out articles every other week plus has me doing other work.
You'd think it would be easier to get retainer clients because they usually get a reduced rate but I've found that they don't want to (or are scared to)commit even if it is a little cheaper.

Yeah, I'm not sure why so many are afraid to commit even though they will probably use you anyway. Something about a contract scares people.
Yep, I think that's it because like you say, they're more than likely going to use you anyway.
Matter of fact, all of my clients go over 10 hrs a month so it doesn't make sense to pay more when they could pay less (not that I'm complaining).
I have one 'big' client on a retainer. Then two smaller clients who I have a monthly budget to work with.
I don't think I could take on another big client and keep my sanity
How do you guys work out retainer rates? I didn't give a discount to my main client, we just decided to work out a biweekly check.
I find I'm way more dedicated to him because of it. So I know it has worked in his best interest.

I offer a discount based on the # of hours they retain. The more hour the bigger the discount. So like if they retain 10 hrs, they get 20% off but if they retain 40 hours they would get like 50%

Hi Jen!
I'm sure it will happen. How large is your work load currently?

Hi There Lori :).
Right now I have three small clients. They equal to only about 6 hours a week. I am starting to market and hopefully word of mouth will get my foot a little steeper out in the VA world.
You're off to a great start! Word of mouth will definitely help.
I've always had great luck via elance when I'm short on work. I know their fees have got steep - but it's always been worth it for me.
Many of my ongoing clients were a result of a one time small gig through elance.
Marketing locally would probably get you a ton of biz too. There is so much less competition locally then there is online :D
