Making a budget.

It is important to WRITE down your budget before you begin anything. his gives you some idea about your resources and how you can allocate them
You may not be able to balance it, but at least there is a target in front of you.

I agree with needing a budget. I always call them road maps. They tell you where you're going and how you are going to get there. It's wonderful to want to travel cross country, but if you don't have a map, you stand a good chance of going in circles.
