I set my website up around 6 months ago and the words google page rank kept coming up. I did a search in google and added the code to find I have a ranking of 3 for my site.

I am still unsure what this means, I understand the higher the ranking the more your site is rated by google, but what actually pushes your ranking up? Also my site can still no be found under the relevent keywords in google (I got to page 48 before giving up yesterday) any reason why?

Basically I am asking what the ranking means and what methods help it?

Hi Rohoni,

Don't worry to much about Google PR. Although it does have some reflection on your website's 'importance' with Google, it doesn't necessarily determine how well your website will rank for different keywords.

Do some solid search engine optimization research and consider what keywords you want to rank for. Then find out what variations of those keywords people actually search on. You can do this via wordtracker which is pretty cheap to rent.

When you have your list of words, review your site(s) and make sure to work the keywords and phrases into your content. Don't overdo it. Make sure the copy reads well to the visitor.

Add the phrases to your Title tags and meta tags. But again, do a bit of research on this. You don't want to 'spam' the tags... you just want to honestly tell the search engines what each page is about, but skillfully do it utilizing phrases that are searched on.

Review your internal navigation... what links in your site, to other pages in your site, say. If you had a website about dog leashes, for example... rather then saying 'click here' for red dog leashes... and hyperlinking 'click here'... you would hyperlink the phrase 'red dog leashes'... Does that make sense?

Then start building your external link profile -- get other sites linking to you especially with your targeted keyword phrases.

Be consistent, always improving the actual content of your website... and sooner or later you will achieve results. :joker:

Hope none of that was redundant information! But hopefully others will benefit from it as well.

I'd like to add to the great information Lori provided. My front page goes from PR0 to PR3, up and down daily.

I was taught to treat EVERY page individually and to optimize every page individually.

http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/ This is a great keyword search tool. I use it all the time.

I took an awesome online class on SEO. It's free and I learned so much. The class is taught by a gal named Cricket. Her URL is http://www.gnc-web-creations.com/seo-optimization.htm

I was indexed on MSN and Yahoo months before I was indexed on Google. Even know there are days I'm number 3 on Google and days I'm listed 10 on Google. MSN and Yahoo, I've stayed number one for several months now.

Hope this helps a bit.

A lot of things go into Google's overall algorithm. To the Google algorithm, "keywords" and PageRank are two separate items which are nonetheless important - individually as well as part of the whole search algorithm.

In short, PageRank ("PR") is a numeric scale from 0 to 10 and it looks at a page's "relevance", mainly by looking at how many other sites link to your page. Basically, those sites are voting that your page is important by the act of linking to it and the more links to your page, the higher the PageRank. Of course, there's more to it than that and Google is changing their exact PageRank formula all the time. Please feel free to check out this detailed article about PageRank (http://www.entrepreneurdad.com/?q=node/2) on my EntrepreneurDad site.

Once Google establishes the PageRank for a page on your site, it also factors in the keywords present in your content as well as how many times individual words appear. Now assume your home page has a PR of 9 and the keyword phrase "sicilian pizza" appears several times on the page. If someone Googles "sicilian pizza", your home page will appear higher in the search results than a page with a PR 1.

That's a simplified description, but you probably get the idea. Hope this helps!

Google LOVES original content. Make sure all of your articles are original and not straight copies. Also really pay attention to the keywords you use. To find the most popular keywords on your topic, check out wordtracker.com.
