I'm interested in exploring ideas on how to promote our businesses on the web in a way that provides people with a value even before they have bought something.

I've been talking with people a lot lately on how sick and tired we are of the spam on message boards and the web at large -- but I'm thinking what we need to focus our energy on should be the solution.

How is it possible to get just as many inbound links or more then spammers? What about some of the following ideas:

1. Truly participate in the forums you visit. Answer questions. Ask them.
2. Visit blogs and rather then spamming the comments, listen to what the blogger is talking about and give them your thoughts.
3. Provide quality content on your website - give it away for nothing.
4. Try to reply to some of the emails you receive from newbies asking questions about your business.
5. Joint venture with other entrepreneurs in your niche.

Think about how these things can benefit you. You will be providing quality content on your website. The search engines love that so much more then black hat SEO!

You will be providing quality content to forum members and the blogosphere at large -- this will cause people to a. visit your website and b. tell their friends or website members about what you have to offer.

You will be making friendships with your competitors rather then driving them nuts by spamming their website communities!

You will be helping people to achieve their own success - and they will be more then happy to do something for you one day.

What do you all think? Any other ideas?
