I submitted to AC for about a year. Recently they have begun paying less and less for articles. The last one I submitted was 1200 words and they offered me a whopping $3.00. I found that to be rather insulting, considering a similar article purchased directly from a magazine publisher would fetch approximately $125.00 for the same word count.
Over the course of a year, I earned $212.00 for 27 articles. AC pays you directly via PayPal. They pay you for each individual article, so if you submit 5, you'll receive 5 individual payments. By the time PayPal takes their fee, you end up with very little in your pocket.
AC is a good way to help you get your name out there, but I find the pay rate to be ridiculous, especially since AC is earning money from Google Adsense everytime someone reads your article and clicks on a Google Ad.
Hope this helps!

If your PayPal account is a personal one, there will be no fees to receive or send money. Although there is a limit of how much you can receive ( I believe it's $600), I don't think one would go over that limit. There are only fees on Premier or Business accounts.

Worldwide Freelance is a great place to locate work. I highly recommend subscribing to the newsletter because they frequently include information about magazines that are looking for specific articles.
Here is the link for the website:

Here is the link for the Marketplace, which is a listing of places that pay for articles:
