I've been doing freelance work "virtually" for one client since 2000. Only a little over a year ago I made the decision to work toward making this a full time career. My plans are to be working 30 hours a week by the fall. Right now I'm doing work for a real estate appraiser, two author, an editorial firm and other projects here and there. My specialties are editorial support, internet research, remote office management, travel arrangements, etc.

As I'm trying to increase the number of hours I work, I'm also being very choosy about which projects I accept. I have a minimum hourly rate that I won't take less than, and while by doing that my business might not grow quite as fast, at least I'm getting paid what I feel I'm worth. :)

I'm always looking for new inexpensive advertising options to hit my target market, and finding that's a challenge, as well as periodically writing publicity articles, press releases etc. Running my own business is more fun, challenging, and profitable than I thought it would be. It's so exciting.

Glad to hear there are other successful VAs on this forum. I know tons of VAs through IVAA that are doing quite well too. I think the opportunities for us all will just keep getting better.

Hi Lauren!

Hey, I am working for a real estate appraiser too! It sounds like you have a lot to juggle already. I'm suprised you haven't hit 30 hours yet.

I hope you keep in mind that we have a VA overflow forum here. I know there is no action there yet... but hopefully we get more reliable VA's as part of our community here and we can help eachother out in a jam.

How did you find your clients? I know that would be helpful information for some of the women here. I started off in elance. Some of those clients became ongoing. Some of my work came through local referrals...

Anyway, glad to have you with us :)

Hi Lauren and welcome! I just love your blog! Have you thought about putting a feed on it so we can sub to it? If you want to, and need help, just let me know and I can offer some help.

Hi Lauren. I think you brought up a great point about being careful when selecting clients. So often, VAs will take any client, even when it is truly disadventageous to them.

VAs offer outstanding value to their clients and are well worth their wages!!!
