Hi my name is Jessica and I am a stay at home mom. I was working as an office manager till I was laid off over the summer. I had all that time to spend with my children and earn unemployment. The unemployment has just ended and now i'm sad that I have to find a new job and leave my kids in the hands of a babysitter. I'm VERY interested in finding a home based job using my skills. I have yet to find anything that looks legit. Everything requires a fee and I'm not willing to pay someone for my time. I'm also not willing to be scammed! I have too little time to deal with people that are just playing games with me. I get atleast 2-3 letters a day by mail on becoming an envelope stuffer. (Just got another one today) I would greatly appreciate anyones input on how I can get started on this long road to working at home!

Welcome Jessika!

With your skills - I am sure you could work as a Virtual Assistant (VA) without a problem. I have found the best way to get started as a VA is through elance (http://www.elance.com/seller?rid=AAGT).

They do charge a fee - and normally I would encourage everyone to steer clear of any 'work at home' situation that requires money up front. But elance is different, honest. Still, it can be a trick to get your first gig there.

Thank you Lori, its exciting to be here. This is probably the most promising lead that I've come across since my long search for at home work. I put so many hours in a day searching for jobs that you would think I would be a pro. The most annoying part of it all is the sites that say they know exactly how you feel and they went through the same thing and now they are there to offer you their book on HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN as long as you pay for the info!

To anyone that is looking for helpers. I'm here and ready to work. I have to find something soon or I have to find a job where I have to travel every day and leave my children. I hope it doesn't come to that but there is no other way to put food on the table for 3 children and myself.
I have so many different qualifications that it could make your head spin!

Hi Jessika,

Sure thing. That is exactly why I started FreelanceMom. When I first started my business I had no money and was just praying that there was something legitimate to do from home that didn't involve me selling to all of my friends.

Most of the sites I came across were less then informative, or like you described, charged a fee.

You might also want to explore the Freelance Gigs Page (http://www.freelancemom.com/gigs.htm).

Feel welcome to post your skills in the resume section here on the forums...

Warm Regards,

Lori

Hello Jessica

Welcome to Freelancemom.com

Very Nice to meet you!

There are alot of scammers out there and its hard to avoid them. Never respond to any type of info that you didnt specifically request.

Always check out info by contacting the attorney generals office, the Federal Trade Commission, the Direct Selling Association, the Better Business Buruea...etc before you join anything!

People will lie to you and tell you anything to get you to sign up on the dotted line!

However, there are legit opptys out there that do charge a small fee to get started, but if you pay a fee for anything, make sure you are getting something in return for that fee such as paper supplies, a consultant kit, membership or something, never pay a fee to just join and get nothing in return.

I wish you much success on your hunt!

Shelly

I was abit confused. Are you Jessica or you a guest? Anyways,

Hola, Coma estas? Estoy apprendiendo hablas en espagnol.
Hi there! I have been trying to learn to speak spanish for about 2 years now, on my own and with my partner. As you can tell, not very well :o

I have to learn it which is why I have some ideas for you! You said you wanted a home biz around with the language of spanish.

Here is my list just for you! I love creating ideas...hmm...thought for me..

Personal Spanish Language Lessons - Basic to Advanced
You can teach individual lessons for people travelling to the Latin countries and need to get by with the basics of spanish "Which way to the hotel?", etc....(I was taking individual lessons with someone)
You can teach at home or on location somewhere. You can also approach schools, community centres, places where they may need instructors for Spanish

Spanish Lessons for Children - Again Basic to Advanced
There are many children (as mine ) who may have the latin culture but cannot speak the language and parent would like them to learn even the basics to be able to communicate with the elders or just to know

Spanish Greeting Cards - except I know that spanish words are different lets say in Chilean then from El Salvador, you would have to be careful so that its interpreted the same way

Spanish Baby Bibs ( I always wanted a baby bib in spanish that said "J'tiamo mi mammi" - forgive my spelling) Cater to a niche product and sell online or approach the latin stores and restaurants to carry your products. As well other cultural specialty stores can be approached such as brazillian, cuban, etc.....for language is very similar right?

Write an e-book on basic spanish - speaking and writing it (for me..LOL)

Have an online niche site with spanish baby name and meanings (I had a heck of a time trying to find some so we made our own!) plus you can add to that......

There are call centres where they need Spanish telephone translators which you can approach maybe if you change your mind about working from home..

Okay I have ALOT MORE but I don't want to write a book for you too.. :o
Be Creative !! Does anyone else need ideas?!!

Phew, I"m tired now..okay bye for now

I think this forum is great!!! I 've been feeling pretty upset lately because I cant find a job flexible enough for my schedule. I go to school full time to become a nurse and I also have a husband! Anyway, I just wanted to thank you. I feel a lot better now reading some of the ideas in this forum. Definately I'd like to put some of them on practice.

Hi everyone, I am new to this site. I am a stay at home mom with three boys ages 7 months, 2.5 and 3.5 years. Needless to say, they keep me very busy. I have so many business ideas, children's book ideas, and I do a little website and graphic design to make money. But I don't have a lot of time to invest in it. My husband also has a very busy schedule so I'm on my own with the kids most of the time.

Anyway, I recently signed up with a domain company: Global Domains International as an independent affiliate. I did a little research on the company and they are a real company selling a real product and they want to give me piece of it for telling people about them. (And they are growing fast.) The best way to find out more about it is to look at their presentation yourself. Take 7 minutes to do so and it might be your best 7 minutes spent!

Welcome Angela :)

What kind of commissions does Global Domains pay?

Have you had any luck with it so far? How are you marketing it?

I'd love to see some of your design work :)

Spanish

I work with a lot of people and the growing hispanic population requires that I be able to interact and teach. I learned some spanish in high school and now with your dilemna, I'll be looking for a site to help me on my goal to refresh my skills and become fluent but would love to support a fellow freelance mom. (Networking will be key). In any case if you start a site to help people to become fluent, count me in. Please send me a private message with whatever you decide.

Back to Spanish:

Have you considered contacting webmasters who may need their web sites translated into another language? I think there is a real market out there for it, and if you are reasonably priced, I think this may be a hit.

Best,

thanks for this great site! I am looking for copyediting work. I also do QA (Quality Assurance) on web sites - in other words, I am a bug finder. If anybody has any ideas about how to find clients, please let me know. joy@jjwebdesigns.com
