Hi
I wanted to share something I found on the internet that realy helped me be less worried about my daugters talking. She is 26 months and I wasn't sure if she was saying engough words - her friend down the street is already talking in sentences and she is just 27 months!! I found speech-check.com where I filled out a questionnaire - turns out she is fine. What a relief.

Thanks for the resource :) And glad your mind is at ease!
I'm thinking about trying baby sign language with Jasmine when she's old enough. Have you heard of that?

Hi Ladies,
Saw some posts on baby sign language and thought i'll speak my mind on it as well. My Sister laurie has had two kids, and she was able to communicate with both at the tender age of one. She went through the Kindersigns program from kindersigns.com.
thought this bit my come in handy with you ladies!

I've read a lot about sign language and children. Everything I've read has been quite positive.

I taught Katie and a little boy I watched how to sign for the "basics" when they were babies... things like "hungry", "thirsty", "play" etc.
The best part was that it really cut down on the "pointing while whining" stage that kids go through because they can't communicate.
You can find the signs online or get books at the library and it is really easy..

Thanks for sharing the site. All children develop at a different pace. I remember asking my pediatrician constantly about the development of my first child. His answer was often the same "she won't walk down aisle ____" whatever my worry was at the time LOL.
It's so hard when we see other kids developing at a quicker pace.
With my second child, I tended not to worry quite as much.
Glad you found us here.

Maybe I can give some of my daughter's talking over to you. :) Seriously though... I think all kids learn to talk at their own time, and as long as they don't exhibit any other development problems, I don't think there's anything to worry about. I have only one very talkative two year old, and she was gabbing away pretty early, but I have many nieces and nephews, and some of them were barely speaking at all by age two.
As far as baby sign language goes, I started teaching my daughter very basic signs at six months. By the time she was a year old, she could sign at least two dozen words and say the word along with the sign. But, she learned the signs first. There are three deaf children among my nieces and nephews, so all the kids (and moms) in our family have learned to sign at different levels. We don't do the Baby Signs that seem to be the trend these days, but those seem to be similar to traditional ASL (American sign language). I can see why many moms do teach their kids baby signs, because it really does help kids communicate before they can speak.

Thank you for sharing. My nephew is 3 and not talking yet but just had tubes put in his ears (they didn't think he was hearing very well). He also learned baby sign language and it is great that he can communicate his basic needs.

I think that all first time parents tend to compare their child with other children around the same age. I remember when my youngest was still a baby. I freaked out about the tiniest things...when she should get her first tooth, start to crawl, first word, drinking out of a sippy cup, eating with a spoon. Here I was trying to get my six month old to eat with a spoon!! lol Lets say it didn't go so well. But that is what the books I was reading when babies tend to start doing things! Don't believe everything you read and remember every baby developes at it's own pace!!
