Two years into running my own business, my big sister asked me what the best thing is about working from home.

I started to ramble with evangelical zeal: No commute. Better focus on my work and clients. More time with the kids. Flexibility to volunteer at the school or allow my wife, Cobi, to work late instead of always rushing home to relieve child care. Working unshaven -- or worse -- if I feel like it. More time to work; more time to play. . .

"But what's the single best thing?" she pressed.

"It would have to be that I don't work for a jackass any more," I said.

"But you said you were self-employed," she shot back.

Thank heavens for big sisters.

Sometimes I romanticize too much about this new professional life I fell into, like Alice falling into the rabbit's hole. I started my career at a daily newspaper that was a wonderful, paternalistic organization. My dad worked all his life there but I couldn't see doing the same.
