I'm looking to build up a network of contacts - people who can provide services that I don't.
I do basic web creation - but I want to avoid shopping sites, flash as I don't have enough experience to sell those services.
I do DTP and word processing, but not spreadsheets or databases.
I do ebook and ecover creation, but not logos or graphic design stuff.
I don't know whether I'd have a page with these peoples sites on, or simply keep a contact list so when a client wants a service, I can refer them. Or we could work together.
Does anyone else do this? And is anyone else interested? Or does anyone want to give me advice on this?

Hi Dianne,
Actually, I do this now, although informally. I have a small network of people I use when I have too much work (YEA!). I think forming an organized listing of people interested in such work is a great idea. I think, also, that Lori had mentioned doing something similar on Freelancemom.com.
Right now, she has a service directory, which you can take a look at, but I really do like your idea.
A freelance referral network....
Count me in! My skills include:
Website design/maintenance
Shopping cart configuration (such as shopping cart services, not creating a stand alone shopping cart on a client's server.)
DTP
PDF creation
Marketing materials
I have someone who handles database work and flash work for me, at reasonable prices.
I also do any type of admin work, including databases, spreadsheets, etc., as well as Bookkeeping, tax preparation, etc.
I wonder, is there a freelance referral network in place on the web? and do you think it would be something a lot of freelancers would be interested in?

I'm sure they'd be interested - I haven't come across one, and I've reasearched quite a lot over the last few months before setting up my VA business. I'll do some more research on that.
My main worry would be if we had to "vet" people - for example you wouldn't want to recommend someone to a client, or ask the client if you could pass on the work, unless you were sure that person was up to your standards. :?:

That is my worry as well. Maybe it is best to require a portfolio/resume?
and references/testimonials...

Hi Dreuby-
Sounds like a great idea! I would be very interested!!
If you contact me, I can send you a resume/porfolio whatever you need.
I am experienced with Excel and databases. I work contract for a publishing company and that's what I do, a Corporate Directory Database!
Thanks for posting this!

This is something I've said to a fellow Ryze member:
What I'd really like to be able to do is never turn away a client. So rather than have links on my site, when a client has a requirement that I can't meet, I can tell them that I can put them in contact with [name] who can provide that service. Hopefully our clients would then start to think along the lines of "Let's ask [your name] - she'll know someone who can do it."
What do others feel about how this sort of thing would be organised?
I haven't found anything online that sounds like what I'm thinking about, I've mostly found directories.

Dianne,
This is actually an idea I've been tossing around for a while. I'm still in the process of figuring out how to develop it, however. It seems to me that the people we recommend would have to go thru some sort of process....maybe a test project? I don't know, but I really think this is a great idea.
Maybe if we had members with their qualifications listed, and then they list their database of potential vendors. Again, I am still in the thinking stage, but I do believe it is an excellent idea.

Hi Diane
What a good idea!
I do website design, ecommerce sites, database driven (jsp) sites, logo design and web hosting (I think thats all!).
You can see some of my previous work at: www.glassraven.com
If you don't mind I'll add you to my list of fellow UK web designers (I am keeping a list for people who wants someone local to them rather than working across the internet, and also for incase I have too much work on to take on another job)

Thanks Sadie - I've added you to my UK list too.
Debbi/Lori - is it possible to change the name of this topic so others can see what it's about? :)

Celina, just realised I didn't answer your post  !
There are certainly a wide range of talents here - we just need to work out how to organise.

I would also be interested in networking this way. I do digital editing, photo restoration, and graphics.

Hi -
I am relatively new here, but I would like to be on your list, as well. If you would like my resume, I would be happy to send it. I do clerical (typing, proofing, data entry) mostly, but have done a mural in the past and also am a decent artist (I can email some of my most recent/best if you would like it as well). I am a Jack of all trades by nature and can easily adapt - so if there is any misc. work you have and cannot do, I would be willing to take that off your hands, too!
