Well, after moving up to Atlanta, GA from South Georgia for a contract that was too appealing, the company has decided to not go ahead with the project. I've got a little bit of buffer-money, so I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to go ahead and do my freelance design full-time. I'm scared, to be honest, but I'm also excited. I've been doing freelance work on the side for 7 years, and I've always wanted to make this step, but it's not felt right until now.

Any suggestions/comments as to what's worked and what's not?

Amber

Congratulations on your decision to pursue a freelance career. Have you visited any websites like elance.com or guru.com?

I freelance also (as a Virtual Assistant), and I have found those two sites to be particularly valuable.

Good luck. :)

Yay Amber! Sometimes it takes a swift kick in the behind to get us to do what we most likely should have been doing all along. I hope this turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to your career!

A couple of years ago I got fired (for personal reasons) from a job I'd had for almost 16 years and it turned out to be an absolute blessing. No way would I have embarked on a full-time freelance career if that had not happened.

Working for myself these past two years have been great for me. It was tough at first getting enough work and I did some things on the side to supplement it, but after several months I was able to let everything but the writing go.

It's still tough from time to time but no way would I go back to the office now. It's better money-wise than when I was employed outside the home, and the hours and responsibility are a lot less. I really enjoy what I'm doing and no one is standing over me breathing down my neck.

I hope this happens for you, too Amber! Keep us posted, okay?

Thanks, y'all... I've been on a roller-coaster ride of emotions since this all started, but now I'm working my way through to get as much as possible done on all of the paperwork together, which is harder than I initially expected, of course. :)

Girl you can do it! Have a good cry, go to the unemployment office, and get you some work together. You might have quite a few bad days in the coming days and weeks (boy, I sure did) but you will be so happy to be on your own pretty soon! I sure wish the best for you!

Freelance is good, seriously. I've tried registered as a freelance translators Malay-English once upon a time via this translatorscafe.com, and the respond is quite nice. YOu can get many opportunity without knowing it could give you a high demand job. This is just an example, you can do any time of good prospect feelance business.. and the thing is how you sell your product or services to numerous potential clients.. I can think of alternatives like building your own website to introduce your business..

If you are a newbie, however, please pay attention as these website promotional strategies are what you will need to employ over and over again every time you have a new product to promote. Apply these basic techniques and the bedrock of success is laid for you. You can create your own html website using dreamweaver or frontpage. But if you are willing to spend some money for a kick start, I recommend JUMPA.COM. This site builder as far as i concern provide some kind of e-commerce features in which new entrepreneurs can kick start their online business. Try it first before you decided to opt-in! Good luck then.. :)

It's not easy. I became an Accidental Entrepreneur when my company decided to "right size". It is tough at first because so much you do is related to the job. I am a stay at home mom now because I have enjoyed the extra time with the kids (particularly right after school, instead of at 5:30 picking them up from the after care program).

Now I have settled in doing pr assignments from home and doing internet jobs.

Just keep plugging away! Keep a journal of all of your activities daily and you will see how much you are doing.

It's never easy to take the entrepreneurial risk, particularly if it's forced upon you. Based on my experiences with the projects she's helped me with, I'm sure things will work out great for Amber!
