I think we've all had ants invade our home at one time or another. In the July edition of Good Housekeeping, they recommend a few things:

1. sponge the affected area with white vinegar to remove all scents that might be attracting the ants.
2. transfer anything opened, not affected to airtight containers
3. dab cotton pad in peppermint or spearmint and stuff them into shelf corners

The other suggestions were toxic so won't print them here, but these were all ideas I had not tried before.

Another way to get rid of the pesky lil buggers is to put borax and sugar and mix together. Put inside straws and place around your house. This way it won't wash away in the rain. They will eat it and die.

Good tips. I haven't heard of the borax straw one. I had a big plant attract a lot of ants into the house and I tried everything, vinegar included. (I love vinegar). I ended up getting ant traps from the store but I have to be so careful with those because I have a toddler.
