We are looking for a part-time editor to manage the editors of our daily news site. Our mission is to bring high-quality news from hundreds of sources across the Internet to the public in one place. We are an IRS-approved 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We just went live a year ago and have gotten a very positive response. We are a 21st- century news organization built for the future and believe we will become the top news site in the world over time. To view the site, click here –

This work is virtual so you can be anywhere in the world as long as you have high- speed Internet and a phone.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job is 15 hours per week. The responsibilities include:

# Giving feedback to our volunteer virtual editors to ensure the quality of our site. We have nine front page editors, four content editors and three photo editors. The editors work 10-30 hours per week and are very responsive to feedback. Almost all of their training is done via extensive guide books we have developed. You will give short 10- minute quizzes via phone to make sure they know the material before starting. They sometimes have questions while learning the guides, but most of the focus is on giving them ongoing feedback, both constructive and positive, on their work on the live site.
# Scheduling them and overseeing finding replacements if someone can’t make a shift. We have YahooGroups for each editor role that we use for this.
# Helping manage our volunteer coordinator. The coordinator registers volunteers for the web sites we use (our site, AP Stylebook online, and others), keeps track of the feedback you give them, and similar.
# Problem solving and troubleshooting.

We already have someone overseeing our volunteer copy editors and editorial assistants, and a person who recruits and chooses the volunteers. You also would not have to handle marketing, budgetting, or Web site development.

REQUIREMENTS:

# Excellent time management skills.
# Strong computer skills. Ability to use a content management system, and basic types of software. You don’t need to know any advanced software programs or html, but you do need to be very comfortable being online and using basic computer software. Our software is powerful and easy to use. Almost 100 percent of the job is online, with a little bit via telephone.
# Good judgment and ability to troubleshoot situations.
# Excellent memory. You need to memorize the guide books so you can answer volunteers’ questions, make sure they’re doing what’s taught in the guides and similar things.
# Past news experience editing headlines, choosing content, and managing others.
# Very high standards, strong news judgment, and some understanding of online news. Past experience in online news is not required, but helps.
# Strong communication skills and ability to give feedback - both positive and constructive.
# Interest in and knowledge of national and international news
# Knowledge of AP style or ability to learn it very quickly
# Natural inclination to follow the systems we have set up to run the site and manage volunteers.
# Responsible and professional with excellent attention to detail
# Self-motivated

SCHEDULE AND OTHER DETAILS:

We can be fairly flexible - only about three hours a week would need to be scheduled at specific times. It is ideal if you can check emails during the day. There are only about 4 urgent emails a week. Most others can be responded to within a half-day to 2 days.

The main thing is that you be able to get in about 1 1/2 hours a day 4-5 days a week (you can typically do the 1 1/2 hours any time of the day or night), and a half hour the other days The half hour usually is responding to emails, scanning our front page once for 15 minutes, and giving a quiz if needed (if the volunteer can’t do it during the other 4-5 days). The remaining hours can be done any time of the week.

When new editors are starting, there are 2 hours of feedback and review that need to be done during the two days they are starting. It’s possible to have a one-day turnaround time for this, though we prefer shorter. Many of the responsibilities can be done any time during the week. It’s possible the number of hours for this role could increase over time as we grow in size.

We do not have a large budget at the moment, and are currently able to pay between $8.5 and $13.5 per hour depending on a person’s experience and skills.

This work is virtual so you can work from the comfort of home and spend no time commuting. You will be part of producing a great site and have the satisfaction of making the world a better place. We are happy to give you a job title like “Operating Editor” that will be useful for resume purposes.

We have a top-notch staff and cool volunteers who are all great to work with. To read about our team, please view -
