This may be a little different slant to working with children. I’ve been playing with some creative child care ideas for mothers who need to work. I have several moms that work for me at my house--and 4 of them have baby/preschoolers. All the moms work as a team, painting chocolate lollipops, wrapping and packaging them, and babysitting. All the moms are trained for all the jobs. Through the course of the time they are working, they rotate through the jobs, each taking a turn as the baby sitter, caring for their own children along with the others. If a child is having trouble and needs his/her particular mother, that mom can be the babysitter without stopping production down stairs. (What we make is a food product, and we are able to do it in compliance with health regulations by having the children upstairs away from the kitchen.)

In return for this simple perk for these moms, I get some of the best employees possible! Moms that are trying to make it on one income so they can care for their families have to have lots of ingenuity! I call them “The Incredibles!”

I'll bet there are a lot of ways to combine work and kids. Other ideas?

Let me know how it goes, Valerie. And if you get other ideas that make it even better or new ideas completely, I'd love to hear them!

That is awesome! My dad owns his own company, and my sister works part-time for him. We both have two kids. I watch my niece and nephew while my sister works, and I get to have my kids with me. I love it. I get out of the house one or two days a week, and my kids get to play with their cousins.

I think more small businesses would benefit from similar arrangements.
