View Full Version : Curse you MICROSOFT!
:protest: O MI GOD!
Microsoft 2007 for some God forsaken reason does not support background images in html emails.
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Hours and hours of work on a template and then I find THIS out. It totally destroys how the template looks.
Now I'm hours and hours into trying to find some crazy work around.
I could just SCREAM!
Microsoft.... WHY?!!!!!!!!!!

Lori,
When I read the subject I was afraid to open the thread. How frustrating :(

Lori...I hope you get that sorted out. :(
I don't know anything about Microsoft 2007.
Nope -- not sorted out AT ALL. Arrrgh.
Supposedly you can place one large image in the <body> background. Just not in tables. It's truly ridiculous.
But I went ahead and tried to get that to work. No real luck unfortunately.
I'm waiting for my husband to take a look at the code and see if he can figure it out before I just throw in the towel on it.
I feel so bad, this client wanted to send out his first newsletter the first week in January :(

Hmmmm...that is definitely frustrating.
I'm wondering tho, if this is MS's latest attempt at helping to cut down on spam
? Alot of the bad spammers like to "hide" transparent images in the background to verify that the address exists.
I'll see if I can find some info for you.

Sorry, Lori, but if your client really wants that backround image, you're going to have to go back to Outlook '03.

Lori- do you happen to know how many of the readers are actually using Outlook '07? If it's not alot, then you could go ahead and code it with the background image and you might only frustrate a few people.
Here's another suggestion, assuming you know who the Outlook 07 people are - force them to get text emails. Again, and I'm sure you know this already - but make sure that "having trouble viewing this email? click here" is right up at the top of the email campaign.
That's all I could think of off the top of my head. Let me know if you run into any other trouble and I'll help you brainstorm.

Yeah... you mean EVERYONE has to go back to 03. That's the issue, the people receiving it.

Absolutely one of the lamest things Microsoft has ever done...

No idea how many. Probably not so many at this point -- but of course we want this to be part of the overall branding for the client, so I want to finalize a design that they can utilize in the future.
They actually want me to just send the whole thing as an image. Ugh. It's VERY hard to bring myself to resort to that -- but the options are looking slim unless I can talk them into a new design.
They don't want to send it as is and just have outlook 07 people see it without the background images.
It's SUCH a major bummer. Thanks for commiserating!

You are absolutely right. Getting html emails to render 1/2 way decent in an email client is tough to begin with. Now they go and do this. No wonder why so many of the big name companies (I'm thinking Borders specifically) use just one big giant image with some clickable buttons.
