What do you do if you go out to dinner with a friend and when the bill comes your friend does not put in enough? We're talking just 2 or 3 dollars short. Do you say something? If so, what do you say? Do you just cover it? What do you do?

Hey Audrey...I would probably cover it myself. But...I would not make a habit of it. If history kept repeating itself, then yes...I would say something.
Hmm...but what to say? Well first, I'd just drop a subtle hint. When the waitress asks how to handle the bill...I'd probably say something like:
"We'll be splitting the bill 50-50."
Or...Better yet, to solve it all. Just tell the waitress "separate checks." ;)

Depending on who I'm dining with. If it's a close friend, I'd tell them.
If it's $2 or $3, I'd cover it and not say anything and give them the benefit of a doubt it was an honest mistake. If they do it again, I'd say something...tactfully..if I can control myself. lol
I'd definitely cover it. Unless I was broke. Like, literally did not have enough on me. Even then, I'd probably charge it :)

I posted that last night as my daughter went out with a friend and the friend paid $3 less than she should have.
What's "odd" is just last week, I had to pay $3 more than my fair share when going out.
Sometimes for me, I just get tired of "always covering it". It's not the same folks...I go out a lot LOL.
My daughter and I were just chatting about how come we're always the ones picking up the extra.
So, I thought I'd post.
Ok...so who wants to do lunch?

LOL.
Everyone's situation is different. I have one friend. We do breakfast once a month or so. We take turns covering the bill. We both order the same thing at the same place so the bill is always the same. We're both really ok with it. I have another friend, we do lunch. We just always get seperate checks. It works wonderfully.
It's been interesting to read the many answers I've gotten.

ROFL -- Oh.... I'll come too, credit card handy. I'm a real push over about these things, so you can BOTH enjoy a free lunch!
