I have my own website but have never been able to place top 10 in the search engines. I have read about SEO and even tried to optimize to achieve better positioning without any results.
Can anyone point me to the right direction? I really don't know what I am doing wrong. I am not a professional developer, I am self taught, but have been writing html for years.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

I took an online class from a gal named Cricket. I thought it was wonderful. It's free and I learned more there than any other source. http://www.gnc-web-creations.com/seo-optimization.htm This is a link to her class.

The keys are:
1. Keyword Research. I use www.keyworddiscovery.com.
Utilizing the best results from your research:
2. Title tags (unique for each page)
3. Description tag (unique for each page)
4. <h1>, <h2> tags utilizing keywords
5. CONTENT -- most critical. Good, unique content that also makes use of your keywords.
Also critical
6. The structure of your navigation. Make links keyword rich when possible.
7. Don't have pages more than 2 clicks away from the homepage.
8. Sitemap
And of course
9. Inbound links. Particularly inbound links that use variations of your keyword phrases.
But the real key to SEO is to have a terrific site.

Hi
In my point of the understanding of SEO is not a rocket science it is a simple process of promotion of getting votes to your website especially through link exchange and natural content, along with targeted keywords and one can handle it easily by just doing some work at home

Your problem may be a lack of links pointing back to your website. Work on your backlinks to help build your credibility with Google.
