Nearly 1 in 6 employees works from home at least once per week, a Washington-based think tank reports.

The Employment Policy Foundation says it arrived at the finding after analyzing trends among the 19.8 million weekly teleworkers in the United States.

While the study found that 30 percent of those working from home on a weekly basis were self-employed, it also found that a significant share—17 percent, or 3.4 million—worked at home as part of their working relationship with their employer.

The study found that men and women were almost equally likely to telework on a weekly basis. Overall, 14.8 percent of men and 15.2 percent of women reported doing work from home at least once per week. Not surprisingly, those most likely to work from home were parents; 17.0 percent of parents with children under 18 did so, compared to only 13.7 percent of those without children. The trend was true for both men and women.

I've been searching for similar info for the UK, but with no success so far. The most informative was a European Union web site that was last updated in 2001!
