This is so great I just have to you all about it! Those of you who know me know that booklets are my business. I've extolled the virtues of them to you over and over. Well, today I learned something! I learned a booklet can actually help you break into magazine writing! No fooling!

Yes, yours truly offered her booklet to a parenting mag, and expected the usual standard short reply confirming where to send it. But, this time I got a HUGE surprise! The editor replied in paragraphs (as opposed to a single word or short sentence) and told me she would like to have me write a submission, and they will not only mention my booklets but my website as well! Of course, they are under no obligation to accept my submission, but I've got a way in because that editor is now expecting something from me and you'd better believe it's going to be good!

Booklets as a way to get your foot in the door with magazines? Who'd have thought?

Lori: Thanks! I just heard from the editor again and she definitely wants me to write the article. I told her she'll have it by midweek next week, but I'm going to do my best to impress her by having it in her email box first thing Monday morning when she arrives. I promise I'll keep you posted!

Michele: Thanks so much! I must admit I really wasn't looking to write an article. I just wanted to send them a booklet and let them do the writing. I write the booklets, they write the articles. That's how I thought it was supposed to work, and in most cases it does. But, this time I got lucky. This editor offered me something special. She even thanked me for my initial offer! I couldn't believe it because most editors are so pressed for time they only respond with one word or a short sentence, if they respond at all. So, it looks like I'm breaking into a whole new market with my writing, and I'll get to sell plenty of booklets at the same time because the article will be a promotional piece. You can't beat that!

Thanks, Tammy. I wrote the article last night and I'll fine tune it over the weekend. She'll have it on her desk first thing on Monday. I'll keep you all posted - and thanks to everyone for your support and congrats! You know, the rest of you can do this too!

Thanks. Now I'll let you in on a little secret. I'll admit to being a good writer, but luck had nothing to do with this. I simply did what needed doing.

One of my favorite movie lines of all time comes from Volunteers starring Tom Hanks. The line is, "We all must do what we must do. For if we do not do what we must do, then what we must do does not get done." That is so true!

I won't say it's easy to step out of your comfort zone. It wasn't for me the first time. But, after a while it gets easier and eventually it can even be fun.

Now go and do what you know you must do! 8)
