I am tremendously excited to be launching the FreelanceMom.com website and forums.

I feel confident that all women that are interested in or have achieved being able to work from home and Mother their children will gain amazing benefits from using these boards.

Please don't be shy. We all have so much in common. If you have questions, or are curious -- speak up! There are MANY professional Mothers who will have some terrific advice for you.

I envision these boards for brainstorming, sharing, teaching and learning.

Please take the time to read the forum rules, and also read the forum topics to be sure you post in the right place (it will be easier to get a reply that way!)

Feel welcome to contact me at any time with questions or suggestions. On or off the forums. I'm happy to help.

Hello Professional Moms!

I am excited to be a part of this growing community. Between us, we will have a wealth of experience and ideas to share...be sure to ask anything of us and we'll help as best we can.

Plus, we're moms...so, if we don't know the answer, we'll find out, or we'll come up with something! :)

Working at home is never easy, but with generosity and friendship, it helps lighten the load.

Is it really possible to stay home, care for your family and house AND also contribute financially???? It certainly is.

Hopefully, this site will be filled with folks sharing their experiences, nurturing each other and helping us each to reach our personal potentials while nurturing our families.

Pour a cup of tea and settle in for a visit.

With affection......

I have just visited your site for the first time and have been delighted by your content. Thanks for your generous offerings.
I am a writer and have been writing freelance exclusivly for the past year. Freelancing has been a wonderful gift to myself and to my family. I look forward to meeting other professional mom's here. Who says you can't have it all? Certainly not me. My only regret is in having waited so long to jump the corporate ship.
Sincerely,

Welcome Angelina!

It's terrific to have you in the forums :) What type of writing do you do? That sounds exciting!

So... how many kids? How old? We'll look forward to getting to know you and reading your contributions to the community!

As you can see, we're pretty much brand new - but the community is building and I have high hopes that we can all benefit from eachother.

Warm Regards,

Please take the time to read the forum rules
Hi Lori :),

Maybe I've missed it, but I can't seem to find the forum rules, except what was presented during the registration process (where you click "I agree"). Are there additional rules to read?

Also, are we permitted to include links to our own businesses in our signature? Thanks! :)

Welcome to the forums Kim!

Thanks for taking the time out to join us. I have heard that Oregon is gorgeous! Lucky you :)

We'll look forward to hearing more from you. Let us know a little bit about the business you are doing over in the 'Work at Home Ideas' section.

I think you are one of our first members marketing a product rather then a service... I'd be interested to hear more about how it is working out for you.

Hi!

I just found this site, and am very excited. My daughter is now 5 years old, and when she was born I quit my job in the corporate world to take care of her full time. Last year I was able to find a full time job that I could do from home (as a freelancer) and was hired with full benefits September 1st, 2003. I totally believe it is possible for anyone to work from home doing what they love, but it takes a lot of commitment and patience. I have always wanted to share my experiences with others, but I feel that whenever I offer they think I work for some type of recruiting "work form home" thing. This is not the case, in fact, you won't be able to get a job where I work, I have just done so much research (which involved getting "scammed"), and want to share my experiences with othersand encourage them in sticking with their dreams of both working and raising the kids.

Hope to get to know everyone!

Oh and I am also setting up a website for my hobby of creating Greeting cards, so here is a shameless plug.

www.cardsbycorie.com (i just registered this morning, so it won't be up til Wednesday - November 12th afternoon)

Hi there! And Welcome!

I love what you wrote. You obviously have a big heart. If you have time, would you consider writing a testimonial of your success for our 'Your Success' page? I'd love to include you there and would be more then happy to link over to your new site at the bottom of your testimonial.

Give it some thought. You're more then welcome.

As for the plug -- That's half the fun of being here! Please register and add your site to your signature. We all would love to hear more about what you are doing AND visit your site.

Thanks for joining :)

I just found this site through an article Lori had written in the Freelance.Com newsletter. I have been freelancing as a writer since 2000. I am looking to pick up my work and make a better living as my children are needing me less and less (oldest in college, two that will graduate high school in 2005, another in 2006 and two younger children).

I look forward to networking here and maybe finding additional work. You will find that my passion lies in my art, not my writing, though I have tried recently to combine the two.

Hello everyone!
Just like Nicki, I also discovered this site from Lori's article on allfreelancework.com. I've visited many freelance sites in the last two days and this is by far the friendliest with personality above the rest. I'm very excited to meet many of you as well.

Here is a little bit about myself:
I'm 34, married with two children. My children are ages 3 and 3 mos. I'm a graphic designer and have been for 11 years. I never realized how important it would be to me to work from home until I had my first child. Before then I had an incredible job as an Art Director for a national magazine. After she was born I joined the freelance world and loved it. Lately work has been hard to find locally. I still have my long term clients (hopefully forever!), but there business has slowed down. I decided to turn to the internet to find more work and that is how I ended up here!

I hope to get to know many of you and look forward to many more posts!

Welcome new ladies!

I can't tell you what a great support this site is to me, in my life as a WAHM. I've been working freelance for the last 4 years and it's fun, exciting, stressful, etc. etc., but well worth it to be at home with my little guys (10, 6 & 5). I rarely leave my house, in fact

Anyway, welcome all!

Glad to meet you.

Hello Everyone,

I don't exactly know where to start. I am a thirty four year old executive assistant. I enjoy my job and working with the employees. I love being able to help and the thrill of solving problems or leading people in the right direction is a reward in itself. Don't get me wrong, I love the little gifts that I receive from the employees because it lets me know that I am highly thought of and appreciated. :D If it was possible to provide this type of service without having to leave my home then I would jump at the chance. I want to work and help take care of my family but I get tired of being confined to a workspace that only allows "specific freedoms". These "freedoms" are usually handed down from corporate and you have to have a certain amount of time "under your belt" before you are even allowed to use them. I have witnessed wrong doings in the office environment and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done if you want to keep your job. I am the type of person that wants to work but I hate to have someone looking over my shoulder. I think if a person is able to do a job and they have the qualifications then they should be allowed the chance. I hope to find work that I can do from home that will be challenging as well as helpful to others. I am looking forward to working with others that appreciate everyone on the team. Thank you freelancemom for the opportunity to say hello and try something different.

My name is Carmen. I am the proud mother of a 19 year old daughter and a 12 year old son.

I have been working since I was 14 and I think I am ready now to venture on my own, since the children are basically grown. I have 20 years experience in the computer field and accounting/bookkeeping.

I am researching the VA field, I have the first draft of a business plan ready. I am not looking for financial backing, it is a map for me.

I look forward to making new friends on this board, and learning from everyone elses experience.

Hi everybody,
I think I am posting in the correct spot.
I just joined the forum. I am a mother of a beautiful little 4 year old who will be starting kindergarten next August.
I am new to all this..but am very interested in utilizing all resources available to me. I live in Pheonix, AZ. I have been working in corportate america for a little over 10 years.
My experience is wide and vast.
I am thinking of branching out on my own and starting my own virtual assistant service.
Lori,
The tip about joining organization was greatly appreciated.
Currently I belong to a few, which are work related. I have a good starting clientele, people I work with on a daily basis.
They have come to know and trust me.
Could you provide us with some tips on how to market our services?
Is it appropriate to approach a potential client while you are still working for your company?
Lots of questions.
Thanks for the great site
Look forward to meeting you all.

Thanks for joining us Holly!

It sounds like you should have no trouble starting your own VA service. You have all the experience and enthusiasm to do it successfully.

Here are some articles for Marketing Your Business (http://www.freelancemom.com/promotion.htm). I hope you find some useful information.

Let us know what you try out. We have a Promotion Tips Forum (http://www.freelancemom.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=33) where we could have some excellent discussions on promotion.

My husband recently joined me in our home business. I have started a website, Redfield Outsourcing Ideas (http://www.outsourcingideas.com) and am in the same position now where I need to begin promoting our services. I'll keep you updated on our progress in the Promotion Tips forum.

In regards to approaching potential clients... I think it completely depends on the nature of your relationship. What you wouldn't want to happen is for word to get to your boss before you have given notice. Keep us updated!

Good to have you here :)

Lori

Hi Everyone -

I cannot believe I actually found a web site on the very topic I have been living for the past 6 years. I have been an independent freelance consultant and mom for the past 6 years. I run my own pay per click management company in Littleton Colorado. I am just looking for a resource center to pull from when life get's tough.

My current client Video Professor has a very aggressive cost per click account that I manage. They sell computer tutorials on CD and online. See my signture for domains if you are interested.

I am very excited to have found this forum. Please post back with any work/life balance resources for this working freelance mom.

Lori first let me first say thankyou for this site, it does get a little loney working from home. I am a journalist by trade, now that I have a son I have decided to attempt to work for myself from home as A freelancer. It' all a little daunting I must confess.

I'd realy appriciate addvice any one might have regarding requesting payment , is it half up front?
if payment is oppon comopleation of a project how do you not get taken advantage of. I also have never had a personal website that was not provided by an employer how do I staryt such a thing?

I specialize in research writting , press releases , human interest, and coppy edditing ; I also do my own photagraphy. I would azlso would love to try my hand at writing for children , if any one has addvise on this if any one has tips they woud be willing to offer

Hi, welcome to freelance mom! Unless I know the client, I ask for 1/3 down, 1/3 on beta and 1/3 upon completion. With writing, it is 1/2 and 1/2, typcially. I try not to worry that I won't get paid because I don't think clients like it when money is a huge issue - I've been burned a few times, but mostly not. It's just one of the things you have to deal with when you do business. One good note: if you bill someone and they don't pay you, you can write it off as bad debt for the year :)

If you want to get a web site going, there are some great designers on the forum (myself included :) ) who would love to help you get started. You might post something asking for a quote, or some such. I'm sure you will get lots of help and advice!

Welcome!

Hi, I'm a young strong and motivated woman, seeking a good honest, free work from home job. The reason why I say free is because I don't believe in paying someone for work, it just does'nt make since. I have one young child and married, My husband is in Bagdad, serving his country. I want to work from home because I want to be there for my child, it's bad enough that her father is not around, so I would like to stay at home to keep my mind occupied with something positive. And I would like to earn extra money, so I can send gifts and cards ect.... to soldiers over seas who don't have a family to support them. Does anyone know of any free work from home jobs no cost to me or someone who is already succesful and need a helping hand? :-)

I just found this site and forum and I'm really excited about meeting others in the same or similar boat as me. I'm a stay at home mother of 2 little ones and I am looking for ideas about what opportunities are out there for moms who want to stay home but still work. I'm in the perfect position now because I don't HAVE to work, but I want to contribule and choose the best route to do so, whether it be schooling for now or work, but I want to be able to do it from home so I can take care of my babies. I look forward to talking to as many of you as possible.

Hi,
I am from North Carolina and recently began working from home (after 17 years as a travel agent for American Express)

I have always loved to write and for this past year have writting monthly articles about my one and only daughter going off to college (last Aug.) and have since been hired by our local paper as a business writer.
I have so far sold a couple stories to magazines too.

On top of this I have started an online store called givitup all about fresh starts, positive attitudes and giving up what's standing in your way:
http:///www.givitup.com

Along with this I have a blog http://onlinestoregivitup.blogspot.com
about my trials and adventures in starting my store.

It has definitely filled my "empyt nest" time! And has been a huge growing/learning experience!

Hi All,

I recently was "down-sized" from a company I had worked for, for alot
of years.

So now, I'm forced to stay at home and take care of the duties and
responsibilities that go along with maintaining a household !

I give you ladies alot of credit; it's been a real education !

Anyway, I needed to find something to do to contribute to the overall
household income; which, after a great deal of research, led me to the opportunity attached to the link.

Check it out, if you'd like; it's been really good for me !

So how is the "system"working for you? I have been in it a month now....

For me, it's been less than three months and I started to see some action fairly quickly.

I opened the "V-store" and did alot of ad placement with Google and others.
You really need to promote, because there's certainly enough competition out there.

I found, if you take advantage of alot of the promotional ideas they supply, some will be fruitfull. It's trial and error.

So how's [U]your[U] business ?

Hi all! Glad to meet you all. It's exciting that there are some work opportunities out there for 'us' who are unable to leave the home much.

I've actually just moved to Australia after 4 years of living in Korea. I was teaching part-time English there. That's a really good financial prospect if you're up for a challenge! I was sad to leave but my husband got re-directed to Australia for work and being back in an English speaking country I've found that there are other opportunities to make money which are encouraging.

Anyway good luck everybody on your business-making ventures and I look forward to chatting with you more.

Hi Lori,

Thank you for this site. I am fairly new to the internet community and was looking for a home based business. I started my online store, that is fairly new, but not very successful yet. I have also been looking into other ventures. I can't wait to hear what other people are doing, what their successes are and what companies to avoid. Thank you again!

Thank you for the welcome. Well, I have a full time job and have been dabbing in looking for a work at home job. I was truly trusting in many of the home base business, but am frustrated because all seem to good to be true...over promise and undeliver. I started my own store for wedding planning, but am horrible at marketing. I am paying more to advertise then I am getting in return. So any marketing advice helps. Also, has anyone tried selling Mary Kay? I am thinking of selling that product although with a 16 month old, I have no time to put make up on!

Dear jgs,
If you love scented candles , I have a FUN business with an extremely low start up!
I too searched for 2 solid months and got involved in 2 projects, basically involving internet marketing and advertising, both promising BIG results.Neither of those have done much and I will be hitting them back for their "money back guarantee". One did involve an online store.. I wonder if its the same one? Email me at robinb81161@bellsouth.net
However, in my candle business, Im having a BLAST and making profit! What is great about this company is marketing ideas of these candles is unlimited ( except for EBAY) . The candles sell themselves.
If this is something you might be interested in..email me at the above address and I can get you some information, or feel free to call ! If you email me with your complete mailing address and phone I can send you some samples.

Good Luck in your pursuits! :hello:

Hey Again,
Im kinda in the same boat with you girl.. paying more for advertising than Im making..on a couple of projects.. however I also have sold Mary Kay.. and was recently considering getting back into it..I quit because it takes $200 order every three months to remain active, and I wasnt comfortable going into ppls homes to do facials...especially ppl I didnt know. anyways have you considered any other businesses.. or do you like cosmetics? I am also talking and looking at Arbonne. Are you familiar with them?

Hoping to meet other moms in a like wise situation and maybe we can find ways to help each other out! I know I have an opportunity to help others make unlimited income but I just need to get my message out you know? I hope I have come to the right place!

Hi,

No I have never heard of Arbonne- I am still on the fence on Mary Kay. Right now I am just trying to concentrate on one project. Periodically I get some information about selling health products- have you heard of Xango? What about a sam's club type store called Metacula??? Not sure if I am spelling that correctly.

Arbonne is a cosmetic company like MK...but it is only $29 to get started with $100 order (35%off...so ends up being $65). then thats all for a year and you remain active and everything you buy is 35% off, and if you sign up ppl under you , you get commission plus you make 35% off everything you sell. Then its $15 a year to keep your consultant number.
With MK.. you have to make a $200 wholesale order every 3 months to remain active, but you can keep your consultant # for a year, after that you have to pay another $200 to get active again..
Idk what Im going to do yet.. I got my money back today on a project I got involved in that wasnt doing anything.. and I wasnt going to put anymore money into it to promote it..So that felt good!
If you love burning scented candles.. check out my site and enter the FREE CANDLE drawing! You can enter once a day.. drawings every SAT!
Mia Bella is a great company and very easy to sell these candles.. because they are DELICIOUS! :colors:

Hello everyone. I am a newbie as they say. I am looking for a site that I can meet people like me who want to get out of the rat race before they're too old to enjoy life. I will be 50 on Jan. 1st. and I do work outside the home for now. I want more than any thing to be in charge of my life. I sell Mary Kay and I love it, I'm just to tired by the time i get home to do anything about it. I need a kick in the backside I'm sure, but also ideas to help me overcome my fear of making phone calls. I have no problem talking to people face to face, but the phone is completely different.

Hello Lori and other work-at-home moms,

Glad to have found this forum of work-at-home moms like myself. I have been working from home for 3 years now and feels so blessed for being given the opportunity to have a homebased business.

I'm also happy to know that there are many mothers (and fathers, too!) are gainfully working right in their home not more than 3 feet away from the kids. I hope some other parents are given the same opportunity we work-at-home parents are enjoying so they could look after they're children too, earning a living at the same time!

Hello - my name is Amber. I am 26 years and I have a 10 month old daughter. I have been looking for a work from home job for ever and I have had no luck yet - I don't have money for start up fees and I am scared of getting scammed.

I try to do as much freelance design work as possible (see my website) but that is just not enough. I hate to get a "regualr job" and take my daughter to daycare, but it it looking like that will be what I have to do. My husband is a hard worker, but it is just barely enough for bills and I want to be able to help out.

I hope that this site/forum can help me out.

its good to share experiences. My grandaughters are Nadia and Amber

At the moment I am trying to help with global warming by using a new

My name is Gabriella and I live in Melbourne Australia. I have to admit right from the start that I am not a mom... :( but I have a wonderful dog named Scooby and he is as close to a son as I'll ever get I think!!! I will be sorry if I'm not allowed to be a member because I'm not officially a mom, but I hope Scooby counts! Anyway, like all of you, I'm trying to find my way to a better life and I've been working really hard the past few months and I think I may be getting somewhere... though it will take alot more time and tenacity.. we can never give up our dreams.. my motto is "Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there" - so I don't just sit - I WORK HARD. But I love it and I get to meet lots of nice genuine people like you along the way, so it can't be a bad thing..

Anyway, I will post again soon to keep you all up to date with what I'm doing and if I can help anyone, just ask! I hope to keep informed on what you're all doing as well - and if anyone can help me along my path I welcome it always.
